Notes & Reviews:

Johann Blanchard discovered more than twenty cartons packed with musical scores, including unpublished manuscripts and printed editions long out of print, in a relative's garage. The young pianist quickly realized just what treasures he had found. They included a great many pieces by Cecile Chaminade, a pianist and composer who was very popular during her lifetime. And so for his solo debut on MDG Blanchard decided to present a most highly demanding look at the oeuvre of this extraordinary musician.

Chaminade enjoyed an enormous, worldwide reputation: in England she was received by Queen Victoria, after her first visit to the United States numerous Chaminade Societies were founded, and in her native France she was admitted to the Legion of Honor - the first female composer to be so honored! Piano compositions and songs form the focus in her oeuvre.

Johann Blanchard has close ties to Cecile Chaminade. His father, he took a concert pianist, studied with the Cortot pupil Wilfrid Maggiar, who dedicated himself almost exclusively to Chaminade's music especially during the last years of his life. The "Manfred Burki" Steinway concert grand piano of 1901 brings back to life the Parisian salons of the turn of the century in perfectly balanced MDG sound.

American Record Guide, November/December 2015
The Piano Sonata is a wonderful composition, inventive and well-constructed to be sure, but a solid and satisfying romantic piano work. We tend to view Chaminade through the lens of the small piece. Blanchard crafts a large-scale performance in the true romantic spirit - big virtuosic moments interspersed with tender, very melodic sections. His technique and interpretive abilities bring this sonata to life, and it should be heard far more often. The etudes display a wide range of piano techniques and are akin to the concert-level etudes by Chopin and Liszt. I am very happy to have the complete set on one disc.
