Notes & Reviews:

Harpist Yolanda Kondonassis and guitarist Jason Vieaux have come "Together" to create a recording featuring two world premieres for the duo. Each of the five works on this recording shows off the unique character of the harp/guitar combination in general, with the two premieres especially revealing the engaging musical personalities and communicative skills of this duo in particular. Since making her debut at age 18 with the New York Philharmonic and Zubin Mehta, Yolanda Kondonassis has been celebrated as one of the world's premier solo harpists and is widely regarded as today's most recorded classical harpist. Jason Vieaux, "among the elite of today's classical guitarists" (Gramophone), is the classical guitarist that goes beyond the classical, putting his expressive gifts and virtuosity at the service of a remarkably wide range of music.

Very Modern Chamber Music
Kondonassis/Vieaux Together AZICA

Harpist Yolanda Kondonassis and guitarist Jason Vieaux, each among the worlds foremost virtuosi on their respective instruments, have produced what might one of the most surprising recordings of the year.

Of course, with the reputations that each of these great musicians has earned, it is unsurprising to hear music played with such clarity, depth of feeling, and understanding; their interplay and the tonal blending is such that, as Mr. Vieaux comments in the liner notes, it is sometimes difficult to tell whos playing what.

The real surprise in this case lies in their choice of repertoire, particularly it relentlessly modernist thrust; most of the pieces were written within the last 10 years. The effect is rather like hearing chamber music thats been dragged into the 21st century to be played in a modern apartment designed by I.M. Pei.

Always interesting, even intriguing, Together by Yolanda Kondonassis and Jason Vieaux may not be for every taste (anyone who chooses it based solely upon its instrumentation could be in for a shock), but the more open-minded, adventurous music fan is likely to be rewarded with a truly unique listening experience.

Highly recommended - 9 out of 10 - Oscar O. Veterano
