Notes & Reviews:

The Brook Street Band has easily earned its reputation as "the smartest new baroque band around" (The Times, London). Among today's most notable Handel specialists, the group's founder, cellist Tatty Theo, and harpsichordist, Carolyn Gibley, turn their attention for only the second time to the music of J.S. Bach as well as his son Carl Philip Emmanuel. Like father, like son, each wrote three Sonatas for viola da gamba and harpsichord. These works have long been a valued part of the cello repertoire, but this recording is the first to make use of a regular four-string baroque cello.

BBC Music Magazine
Impeccable ... the vitality is riveting ... delightful.

American Record Guide, July/August 2015
The quality of performance, on the other hand, is quite high. Theo plays with grace and accuracy and balances well with Gibley. This program is almost duplicated by Daniel Muller- Schott and Angela Hewitt, the difference being that Hewitt plays an early piano rather than the harpsichord, and the CPE Bach Sonata is W 559. This one is literal, Muller- Schott is improvisatory as well. CPE wrote three sonatas himself. For further information, try the Cello Overview (March/April 2009).

Gramophone Magazine, May 2015
There is a close match between cello and a harpsichord of cutting transients which fits the businesslike virtuosity of much of the playing. Choice of tempi cannot be faulted and rhythm is exact.
