Notes & Reviews:

Charles-Marie Widor's name is synonymous with 19th c. French organ music. His ten symphonies for organ solo are still regarded as the non plus ultra of the virtuoso French school. Christian Schmitt is again the interpreter of this first, freshly recorded organ symphonies solo opus. His recording of the Organ Symphonies opp. 42, 3, and 69 was awarded a 2013 ECHO Klassik prize. The Saint-Ouen organ, which Mr. Schmitt plays, is one of the last instruments built by Cavaillé-Coll (Widor friend and early supporter), and has survived without modification, lending it high historical significance.

A lot of love and care has gone into this CD...making it a welcome addition to the catalogue.

Gramophone Magazine, May 2015
St Ouen's organ was described by Widor in 1890 as 'an organ for Michelangelo' and it's the perfect instrument on which to hear his music, if, that is, you don't mind missing too much detail in the fast/loud passages.

Schmidt's playing is musical, virtuosic, and well attuned to the 19th Century French romantic aesthetic. He also enjoys the advantage of playing on Caville-Coll's magnum opus, the organ in the church of St Ouen in Rouen. This is the sound that Widor had in mind when composing these symphonies. The recorded sound is vivid and captures the subtlety and power of this stupendous instrument.
