CD Review, 28th March 2015
Hugely enjoyable and entertaining...it's beautiful, it's a big, lavish production.

The Guardian, 19th February 2015
Typically Jacobs make the orchestral realisation of the score sumptuous within its turn-of-the-17th-century constraints; no one could mistake this for anything but a grandly ceremonial piece.

Composed at a time when neither oratorio nor opera existed, Emilio de' Cavalieri's musical drama Rappresentatione di anima et di corpo combines song, stage action, dance, and instrumental music in perfect harmony. The work's libretto, attributed to Agostino Manni, presents a musical morality play in which soul and body dispute, with the participation of other allegorical characters and angels and souls both in heaven and hell. On this new recording, maestro René Jacobs illuminates this key work, which was written at the dawn of the Baroque revolution.

BBC Music Magazine, Awards Issue 2015
This is an extravagant and embellished view of the original score, at times almost Romantic with its opulent orchestral palette and lush choral singing...Jacobs and his superb musicians produce sumptuous colours and textures...Acoustical effects, echoes, off-stage voices and instruments dramatise the earthly and the intangible divine.

Gramophone Magazine, May 2015
[Jacobs's] reading, derived from a staging at Berlin's Staatsoper im Schiller-Theater, absolutely reeks of the stage...firmly characterised singing and lusty playing. Rappresentatione may not be a masterpiece of opera but surely no performance has ever worked harder on its behalf than this one.

American Record Guide, September/October 2015
Deluxe package with 100-page booklet, full texts, notes, translations, essays by Rene Jacobs and Silke Leopold. Once you have this release and become familiar with this piece, you'll want to hear more: another very fine recording is by L'Arpeggiata, directed by Christina Pluhar (Alpha 65, J/A 2005).
