Notes & Reviews:

This release featuring violinist Rachel Kolly d'Alba, pianist Christian Chamorel and the Spektral Quartet Chicago, presents two major works of chamber music written at the dawn of the twentieth century. Few works of the period are more recognizable than César Franck's magnificent Violin Sonata. The work has been transcribed for nearly every instrument on the planet, and is a permanent staple of the repertoire. Franck's influence on Ernest Chausson's Concert is unmistakable. A late-Romantic hybrid, the work blends elements of piano quintet and string quintet styles.

American Record Guide, July/August 2015
I've always enjoyed the famous Franck Sonata. This is a great one, so I really lucked out. Rachel Kolly d'Alba plays it with lustrous tone and flawless technique. The piano part, which is as demanding as the violin, also gets an impressive reading from Christian Chamorel. He plays with rich tone, sensitive phrasing, and a brilliance that matches D'Alba's. The duo develops each movement with grace and patience. Chausson's Concert for violin, piano, and string quartet again shows both players at their best. It's something like a miniature double- concerto, or perhaps concerto grosso, with the piano and violin at the center and the quartet in a supportive role. There is a clear Franck influence, but as the notes point out, shades of Wagner and FaurT are also present. D'Alba and Chamorel play with plenty of flair, and they look great, too. D'Alba's press kit mentions her remarkable stage presence, and I imagine seeing this duo in concert would be delightful.
