Notes & Reviews:

Schubert's unforgettable characterizations of women: Gretchen, Suleika, Mignon, Ellen and Delphine are the subject of this CD, devoted to exploring Schubert's homage to "das ewig-Weibliche", Goethe's expression for the eternally feminine. Soprano Martha Guth and fortepianist Penelope Crawford present these unique portraits with insight and sympathy, enhanced by the use of a magnificent original fortepiano by the great Viennese maker, Conrad Graf.

This lovely program explores female protagonists in Schubert songs, such as Gretchen, Mignon, Suleika, and Ellen. The latter, from the Ellens Gesanges settings from Sir Walter Scott's Lady of the Lake and I like them a lot. Other nice inclusions are 'Die Junge Nonne', more dramatic scene than song, pieces on the theme of Delphine, the slave girl from Wilhelm von Schtz's Lacrimas, two lullabies, and the famous 'Litanei'.

Guth sounds good and nice round quality to her sound. Penelope Crawford is pure gold here; she makes the fortepiano come alive in each piece. Her playing in 'Die Junge Nonne' gave me chills. I heard new things in the accompaniments of every song.

A worthwhile addition to your Schubert library. Notes by Susan Youens, texts and translations.
