Notes & Reviews:

The final release of Ondine's George Enescu (1881 - 1955) symphony cycle includes two neglected masterpieces: the 1st Symphony, filled with youthful energy, and the poetic and lyric Symphonie concertante for Cello and Orchestra. The soloist of the Symphony concertante is the award-winning cellist Truls Mørk. Enescu wrote both works at a relatively young age: the Symphonie concertante at age 20, while the 1st Symphony was premiered when the composer was 25. Even so, Enescu had already by then created for himself an impressive career as a composer with several large-scale works. The Ondine recordings with Hannu Lintu and the Tampere Philharmonic Orchestra have proved to be extremely successful. The first release of the Enescu cycle received a Gramophone Award Nomination in 2013. Hannu Lintu and the orchestra also received a GRAMMY nomination for their recording of Rautavaara's Kaivos Opera.

Gramophone Magazine, May 2015
Truls Mørk is top dollar in all key respects, his phrase-shaping sensitively inflected... and his tone production as warm as anyone could wish for... a definite thumbs up for Mørk and Lintu.

American Record Guide, July/August 2015
The Symphony No. 1 followed four years later, and there's a world of difference! Enesco spins and twists the shimmering harmonies into something new every measure, and it's instantly apparent that his melodies are far stronger. The first movement is mostly sunny with a few scattered clouds and spring like. It's divine when the themes come together toward the end for a delightful, unusual waltz. There are again touches of Mahler. A strange near silence follows, then, as the notes have it, "the half-light and sensuous sound...echo the influence of French music". It's a fairy tale. The finale is vigorous, with more than a passing resemblance to a certain Mr Eulenspiegel. Enesco's trademark chromaticism is on full display, as are his shifting, darting themes. The sound and playing are excellent, and the notes - English and Finnish - are well done.
