Notes & Reviews:

Since 1894, Tchaikovsky's Piano Concerto No. 1 has been published and performed in a version containing numerous unauthorized posthumously added editorial alterations. This is the first recording using the new scholarly edition by the Tchaikovsky Archive and Museum in Moscow of the Piano Concerto's 1879 version - the version approved and conducted by Tchaikovsky until his last public appearance in 1893. Noted for his technique, intelligence and curiosity, pianist Kirill Gerstein's has been spotlighted by the NY Times as "one of the most respected pianists of his generation."

American Record Guide, July/August 2015
The substantial filler is a sturdy and steady performance of Prokofieff's first full-length piano concerto. Gerstein eschews the percussive hammering that some pianists give this work, and the emphasis on Prokofieff's lyrical side is definitely welcome. Gerstein's tendency NOT to beat on his keyboard in the scherzo and the flashy finale works very well, and Gaffigan and his players seem more committed, too.
