Steve Howe: Anthology: A Solo Career Retrospective

Album Notes

Prior to this 2015 double-disc Rhino collection, there never was a Steve Howe chronicle. That may be due to Howe being a titan of album-oriented progressive rock, a style that traditionally doesn't lend itself to compilation, but Anthology is nicely executed, running 33 tracks over two discs, offering a sampling of every Howe solo project, including the unreleased 1967 set that was later unearthed for the Mothballs project. Howe assembled Anthology with his son Virgil and it's interesting to see how he slips in covers of Bob Dylan and the Ventures' "Walk Don't Run" in between his own compositions, a move that warms his sometimes distant prog rock and helps this turn into a full portrait of Howe, the progressive rocker. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine
