Notes & Reviews:

This is Volume 1 of Tempesta di Mare's two-disc project of late 17th c. French instrumental music. 'These 'Suites' contain some of the most tuneful, appealing and striking music of the period, this volume offering works by Lully, Marais, and Rebel. As a favored associate of King Louis XIV, Jean-Baptiste Lully was commissioned to compose a comédie-ballet for the visit of the Turkish ambassador in 1669. He composed music for Molière's play Le Bourgeois Gentilhomme; its Turkish ceremony storyline occasioning music using colorful percussion and exotically flavored melodies. While Alcyone, a work of Lully pupil Marin Marais, is a tragic opera composed after Lully's death, Les Élémens, by another Lully pupil, Jean-Féry Rebel, is a ballet, in which is portrayed each of the four elements during the chaotic, confusing creation of the world. Philadelphia's Tempesta di Mare was recently praised by Fanfare magazine for its 'abundant energy, immaculate ensemble, impeccable intonation, and undeniable sense of purpose'.

BBC Music Magazine, April 2015
With a barrage of astringent chord clusters at the beginning of his ballet Les lmens, Jean-Fery Rebel brings the soundworld of Ligeti kicking and screaming to 18th-century Paris...The Philadelphians are a disciplined, well-drilled bunch boasting some chirpy wind players, but the sheer flamboyant theatricality of the music doesn't always come across.

Reviews

From Chaos to Order
One is immediately struck by the recording which is stunning in its realism and presence. There is a nice bloom to the sound partly due to the Curtis Institute venue but primarily the expertise of the producer and engineer. What of the music and performances? The 3 suites drawn from works intended for theatrical presentation represent the French Baroque aesthetic at its most imaginative. Each work is permeated with wonderful tunes, danceable rhythms and much variety in matters of color and texture. Based in Philadelphia, Tempesta di Mare is a conductorless Baroque orchestra comprising around 28 players. Their historically informed approach is stylish, their intonation, articulation and ensemble above reproach. A consistently robust, keen handling of these scores would suggest they thoroughly comprehend the spirit of what theyre playing. This is their ninth disc for Chandos. Its reassuring to know that the English and Europeans dont have a monopoly on world class period ensembles. There is so much happening right here under our noses, with groups like Tempesta di Mare firmly in the vanguard. Incidentally, the liner notes are excellent as well. Volume 2 is eagerly awaited.

Interesting recording of orchestral works for the early theatre
This CD consists of early orchestral works for theatre from the late 1600s into the early 1700s, performed by the delightful Tempesta di Mare (the Philadelphia Baroque Orchestra). It is clear in each of the three works that they love this music and are committed to bringing it to live.

The first piece is the music for a comedie-ballet, the Suite from Le Bourgeois Gentilhomme by Jean-Baptiste Lully, and as such there are some wonderful court dance tunes contained therein. Particularly enjoyable is the Premier Air des Espagnols with its wonderful rhythms (track 9), and the Deuxieme Air des Espagnols (track 10) is just lovely. The Chaconne des Scaramouches (track 12) is jaunty and playful and made this listener smile.

The second work on the disc is the music from the ballet Les Elements by Jean-Fery Rebel. The 2nd movement Chaconne (track 14) is a real treat, and the Orchestra plays it with gusto and a sense of frivolity. Tambourins (track 17) features lively work from the woodwinds and guitar, while Air pour lAmour (track 19) makes excellent use of the flute/recorder section, as well as the theorbo/guitar section.

The third and final work is the Suite from Alcyone by Marin Marais, a Tragedie en musique (essentially a form of opera). There is an opening overture, a warm Sarabande pour les memes (excellent woodwind work on track 25), an energetic Gigue pour les memes (track 26), and the closing Chaconne pour les Tritons et les Nereides is a wonderful way to close this piece and the CD as well.

The sound quality of this CD is very, very good, capturing the lively dynamism of the orchestra and all of the nuances of the guitar and theorbo section as well. The liner notes are well written and informative, providing both historical background as well as information about the nuances of the pieces themselves. For those of us that enjoy Baroque music, this is just good stuff. Sincerely recommended.
