Notes & Reviews:

In exile in London during World War I, Joseph Jongen (Liège, 1873 - Sart-lez-Spa, 1953) composed there numerous works. This CD brings together some of his pieces for orchestra, whose masters are called Franck, Wagner, Debussy and Ravel. His symphonic works from the Great War period compel recognition as the last vestiges of a world on which the language of late romanticism had still left a reassuring mark.

American Record Guide, July/August 2015
The album is called Pages Intimes, and it's already a glorious addition to my library. I finally took the time to listen to Jongen's Symphony Concertant a year or two ago. Well, judging from this program, it is. These pieces were all written around the time of World War I, but you'd never know it. Jongen had been retreating to the countryside each summer since 1908, and he cut short his time there in 1914 and made it to England via Dunkirk. Each of these compositions is a rich, lush paean to beauty; they're impressionist, often languid, and redolent of sunny, restful summers. I'm left with no doubt that all the flavors are authentic. The sound is lovely and welcoming; notes are in English, French, Dutch, and German.
