Notes & Reviews:

As did Bartok later in Hungary, Mykola Lysenko (1842 - 1912), 'the father of Ukrainian classical music', fashioned a musical language - a uniting of the styles of Chopin, Liszt and the essence of Ukrainian folksong - through field research. This CD presents his complete output of music for violin and piano, including the Second Rhapsody on Ukrainian Themes, here arranged for violin and piano, and Spring Kaleidoscope, a new work from composer Viktor Kaminsky, commissioned by the disc's performers, displaying Lysenko's lyrically rich vocal writing via transcription of ten Lysenko songs.

So, if you like the violin doing its thing, you'll probably like this. We also have a disc of piano music by this composer - Arthur Greene, piano - that may be reviewed in the next issue.
