Notes & Reviews:

The Claviorganum by F.X. Christoph from the 18th century is part of a long tradition of combination instruments, uniting the tonal qualities of strung keyboard instruments with those of organ-type instruments. The acoustic result is a fascinating mix of two instruments, as one would probably never hear them in concert. Mozart's much-loved d minor Fantasy and his Adagio for Glass Harmonica can be heard besides lesser-known pieces by Beethoven, Albrechtsberger and others. A must-have for historic performance connoisseurs!

American Record Guide, September/October 2015
This is a co-publication by the Kunst Historisches Museum of Vienna (khm.at) to demonstrate what they claim to be the only playable "claviorgan" from the 18th Century. It is the deluxe Orgelklavier shown at that web site, not the smaller Claviorganum they hold. Franz Xaver Christoph built it in Vienna in about 1785. It is a five-octave square piano mounted on top of a chest organ. Various string-organ hybrid instruments with keyboards existed in the 250 years before this; such expensive one-off instruments for the wealthy were often reinvented. The present example is a late one, having a piano action instead of resembling a harpsichord or clavichord. There are four organ ranks, and the performer can engage three of them on one or both halves of the keyboard. It can play any organ or piano music without pedalboard or damper pedal. This performer, Thomas Schmgner, has chosen suitable music contemporary with the instrument to demonstrate many of the plentiful tonal combinations.
