- Kimiko Ishizaka (Piano)
Notes & Reviews:
Navona Records presents The Well-Tempered Clavier, Bk 1 performed by award-winning pianist Kimiko Ishizaka, regarded as "a gifted and obviously devoted Bachian" by the New York Times. Ms. Ishizaka studied the notes and phrases of Bach's solo keyboard works in a systematic manner in order to discover an interpretation which adheres to the strictures of the great composer's writing. Since 2000, Ms. Ishizaka has been primarily active as a soloist, performing concerti from Mozart, Beethoven, Grieg, and Gershwin, and establishing herself as an interpreter of Bach and Chopin.
American Record Guide, July/August 2015
Ms Ishizaka enjoyed a career as an Olympic weightlifter. In 2009, the year she retired from competitive sports, she began a serious study of Bach's music. She plays without pedal and practices in the dark, which she observes (in her notes) makes her more of a listener than a player. Her performance of the WTC I is very good, technically. The A-major fugue, fast and exciting, is one of the best performances here.
