Notes & Reviews:
Recorded in 2013, Unto Thee I Burn, the fourth release to see the light of day arising from the partnership of Presidential Scholar in the Arts soprano Eileen Strempel and Québec native, Eastman School Asst. Prof. of Chamber Music & Accompanying pianist Sylvie Beaudette features songs settings of e.e. cummings poetry set to music by North American Women composers. One of America's pre-eminent 20th c. poets, cummings was also an accomplished painter; one of his paintings adorns the album's cover. Ms. Strempel is a noted scholar of song literature, especially those by women composers.
American Record Guide, July/August 2015
This interesting program explores "song settings of EE Cummings poetry by North American women composers". I like the poetry very much, as well as the variety of musical interpretations here. Performances are good; Strempel is consistent. Beaudette's playing is able and supportive. The notes, by James Briscoe, read like a prose poem - a nice touch for a program with such strong connections to text.
