Notes & Reviews:

Harpsichordist Nickolai Sheikov makes his recording debut with Musica Omnia in this exciting program of sonatas by the great Italian contemporary of Bach and Handel, Domenico Scarlatti, son of the most famous opera composer of his day, Alessandro, and court musician and composer to the court of his illustrious student, Queen Maria Barbara of Spain, for whom the 555 dazzling, expressive and highly original sonatas were composed. The present program features the full spectrum of Scarlatti's genius, from expressive and intimate pieces to works displaying the most advanced harpsichord techniques of the day.

Sheikov's performances do indeed have greater depth than many others I have heard: I particularly like the aristocratic poise he brings to the music, especially in works like K 347 (G minor) and K 211 (A). In other, more virtuosic sonatas like K 120 (D minor) and K 212 (A) he inflects the music with emotional verve without losing superb control of the instrument and his natural tendency toward gravitas. The instrument, a Hubbard and Broekman (after Pascal Taskin), is - as usual - captured perfectly by Musica Omnia's engineering. It is tuned in the Bach-Lehman temperament.
