Notes & Reviews:

The idea of malinconia in the 19th c. covered a myriad of romantic notions, so to simply translate it as "melancholy" does the term injustice. It subsumes many other emotional states as well - dejection, gloom, unknown sadness, desperation, depression and even frustration. Each language has evolved its own terms, and interpretations differ from region to region. Malinconia in sunny Italy or Spain is quite different from melancholy in Norway and in Finland, with their long, harsh winters. The Nordic variant is expressed here in various musical examples; words alone are anyway inadequate.

American Record Guide, September/October 2015
These two cello programs are both based on Grieg, though Geringas calls his "Malinconia" after the gloriously sad Sibelius piece that opens it. The program ends with Sibelius's well-known 'Valse Triste' arranged for cello and piano. After all of these sad and lyrical pieces the Grieg sonata makes a strong impression. The highly intense climaxes are handled with feeling by Geringas and Fountain. Their program also has a lovely Intermezzo from an earlier unfinished suite for cello and piano. Then come arrangements of 'Morning Song', 'Anitra's Dance', and 'Solvejg's Song' from Peer Gynt, arranged by other hands than the composer. Still, the end result is a singularly effective study of doom and gloom as heard through the ears of two of the primary Norwegian and Finnish composers. Geringas and Fountain play with passion and beauty, bringing out the details and drama of the music to great effect. They are recorded with warmth and clarity. I tend to prefer the Geringas recording.
