Notes & Reviews:

In the summer of 2011 Alexander Schimpf became the first German to win one of the world's most renowned piano competitions: the Cleveland Int'l Piano Competition. Since then, especially on the North American continent but as well in Germany, the doors to all concert halls have been open to him. He follows up his OehmsClassics debut (OC 867) that featured Ravel, Scriabin and Schubert with this release of solo piano works by Brahms (op. 119), Debussy (Images, Bk II) and Beethoven's 32nd and last sonata for solo piano in c minor, op.111.

American Record Guide, July/August 2015
Mr Schimpf is strong in Brahms's last work for piano solo, every downbeat felt, with propulsive, conventional tempos, muscular. Schimpf has a solid left hand and rhythmic drive, is careful with the pedal, preserving a meaty bass line - important in Brahms - without sacrificing clarity. These are satisfying readings. Schimpf's virtues in Brahms are also on display in his Debussy. The endless tremolos and trills of 'Goldfish' and 'Joyous Island' liberate Schimpf from the bar lines so the music swims and soars unbound - these are my favorite performances here.
