Notes & Reviews:

Two landmarks of Russian music on one album! Mussorgsky's masterpiece suite, originally a work for solo piano (later orchestrated by Ravel), is presented complete, and is accompanied by Mussorgsky's prelude to his opera 'Khovanshchina.' Stravinsky's beloved 'Petrushka' has been a staple of the ballet for a century and its titular puppet was originated by Nijinsky. These recordings are transfers from the original Vanguard Classics remastered specifically for release on the Alto label.

'Audio buffs will relish the wide dynamic range of these recordings - made in 8-track sound - a fascinating listening experience' -classicalcdreview.com

'Mackerras evokes atmosphere in every piece [of 'Pictures'], with more consciously dramatic attack, more pointing of rhythm, more swagger in the playing. An admirable account with really brilliant and incisive playing - in Gnomus, for instance. The acoustic in general sounds very well and the performance is both imaginative and really well-played.' -Gramophone
