Notes & Reviews:

On the occasion of the 2015 exhibition that the Grand Palais in Paris is devoting to Diego Velazquez, this disc proposes an evocation of the music that one could have been heard at the court of Spain under the reigns of Philip III and Philip IV. Heirs to the tradition of the Flemish polyphonists, the sacred and secular repertoires increasingly assimilated the influences of the melodies and rhythms of folk music. As attested to by the painter's stays in Italy, Spanish composers were also charmed by the novelties of the Italians' Baroque language.

American Record Guide, September/October 2015
This compilation of music by Hispanic composers of the 17th Century is released in conjunction with an exhibition of paintings by Diego Velazquez (1599-1660) in Paris. Compared to other anthologies produced in conjunction with major museum exhibitions, this one contains well-considered selections. Most of the composers were active along with Velazquez at the Madrid court. There are a number of secular and sacred selections by Matheo Romero, two tonos humanos by Juan Hidalgo, the Credo from Juan Cererols's Battle Mass, and various instrumental selections. In addition to these, there are a canzon by BarolomT de Selma y Salaverde, whose professional career was mostly in Innsbruck and selections from the opera written by Gioseffo Zamponi, Ulisse all'Isola di Circe, first performed in Brussels in 1650 to celebrate the wedding of Philip IV to Mariana of Austria.
