Album Remarks & Appraisals:
A jewel in the crown of British Jazz for many years, but unrecorded since 1994, 'With a Song in My Heart' saw Gill Manly make a welcome and decisive return to the studio. Originally released in 2009 'With A Song In My Heart' has been re-issued as part of Linn's ECHO series which offers a second chance to enjoy the best of the label's award-winning catalogue. Gill Manly is a jazz singer who has been described as 'an amalgam of Bessie Smith and Sarah Vaughan'. Her debut album on Linn, 'With a Song in My Heart', features performances by trumpeter Guy Barker and singer Mark Murphy. A stalwart of London's live music scene for many years, Gill Manly has returned to the recording studio due to popular demand from champions such as Mark Murphy. 'With a Song in My Heart' reflects a period of maturation and reflection. It is a gentle and flawless selection of jazz standards enhanced by the virtuoso playing of Guy Barker on trumpet. 'With a Song in My Heart' sees Manly reclaim her place amongst the current jazz vocalists who have long cited her as an inspiration and a unique interpreter of the jazz singers' vast cannon.
