Album Notes

In February of 2009, Rhino U.K. issued a several-volume series of compilations as a tie-in with Smash Hits, the youth-oriented pop music magazine that was once published in the U.S. as Star Hits. Smash Hits was at the peak of its power during the '80s, and this series dedicates a disc to each year of the decade. The series' first volume, covering 1980, is highlighted by a middle patch of bright and energetic post-disco R&B containing Change's "Searching," Narada Michael Walden's "I Shoulda Loved Ya," Chic's "My Feet Keep Dancing," and Sister Sledge's "Got to Love Somebody" (itself a Chic production). Though all the material appears to be within the domain of Warner distribution, there doesn't appear to be any revisionism going on, given the inclusions that many would term guilty pleasures (Dollar's seemingly helium-enhanced "Takin' a Chance on You," for instance). ~ Andy Kellman
