Notes & Reviews:

Ravel composed his first violin sonata when he was only 22. It was probably only performed once in the composer's lifetime and was not published until 1975, 38 years after he died. This rhapsodic single-movement work, lasting 14 minutes and it certainly sounds like Ravel. Basque-inspired melodies clearly foreshadow works like Ravel's Piano Trio. This is the first time I've encountered it, and I like this performance a lot. Chilemme and Gouin give it the respect of a mature work.

The second sonata gets an excellent reading here. They are often doing the opposite of one another, creating fascinating sonorities. Chilemme and Gouin have a lot of fun with this while always keeping the balance and phrasing perfect. I own two other recordings of this work: Sarah Chang (Sept/Oct 2004) and Dong-Suk Kang (Naxos 550276). Chang plays III with the most clarity, but Chilemme makes II, a "blues", sound most authentic while retaining its distinct Frenchness.
