Notes & Reviews:

Eugen Suchon (1908-93) was the most influential and respected Slovak composer of the 20th c. This new Chandos CD features the Estonian National Symphony Orchestra and its artistic director Neeme Järvi performing three of Suchon's greatest symphonic works, composed during the years he spent teaching in Bratislava, both pre- and post- WWII. His interest in the origins of Slovak folk music and extended tonality are to be heard. Winner of two Grammy® Awards, in 2004 and 2010, the ENSO is the longest, continually operating professional orchestra of its kind in Estonia and tours worldwide.

Gramophone Magazine, June 2015
JSrvi's account with the superlative Estonian National Symphony Orchestra fair fizzes with excitement... superb sound and performances throughout make this the reference recording for Suchon outside the operas and the perfect introduction to his art. Recommended.

BBC Music Magazine, August 2015
Suchon's engaging post-Romantic idiom fuses Scriabin's hot-house exotica with a Gallic predilection for harmonic allure.

The special attention given to the sound of this recording is reflected in the liner notes, which take the unusual step of including a full-page memorial tribute to Estonian sound engineer Maido Maadik (1960-2014), and the auditory excellence of his work as demonstrated here fully justifies this recognition. When everyone and everything works to perfection, as they do here, the result can be a marvel. I recommend this to all who love symphonic panoply at its grandest. It's hard to imagine a more ideal presentation of Suchon's sumptuous musical tapestries.
