Notes & Reviews:

This 4CD box set presents the complete, award-winning cycle of Sir Malcolm Arnold's Symphonies recorded under two of the finest conductors of their times, both exclusive to Chandos: the late Richard Hickox and Rumon Gamba, respectively conducting the LSO and the BBC Philharmonic. Among English 20th c. symphonists, Malcolm Arnold is one of the very few prolific high-profile masters of the genre - comparable to Vaughan Williams. Mr. Arnold's depth, style and structural originality set his achievements apart from his compatriots who engaged with the symphony to any significant extent.

Arnold's love of melody alone means that he deserves to be better known, and those who turn to him for the first time are likely to find a sound-world that is open and welcoming to new explorers.

American Record Guide, September/October 2015
Vernon Handley continues to set the standard and remains the safest overall recommendation. He shows great understanding of the various facets of the music and has an excellent grip on balances and phrasing. Handley's Royal Philharmonic, Hickox's London Symphony, and Gamba's BBC Philharmonic are all more compelling than Penny's National Symphony of Ireland. I also prefer the sound of Chandos and Conifer (detailed and crisp) to the more distant Naxos acoustic. The Chandos set is inexpensive and an excellent supplement to Handley. Its booklet notes appear to be the ones that accompanied the original issues.
