Notes & Reviews:

This fourth volume of Louis Lortie's acclaimed Chopin series perfectly illustrates the elevation of the waltz to a musical art, from danses de salon to 'works' with proper opus numbers. The nocturnes also trace their origins to the salon, the genre deriving from a type of vocal music highly popular among amateurs as an opportunity for singing duets. Attracting critical acclaim throughout Europe, Asia, and the US, French-Canadian pianist Louis Lortie has made more than 30 recordings for Chandos label. "With this series, Mr. Lortie has made his reputation as a 'model Chopinist" (BBC Music).

American Record Guide, September/October 2015
Add to this the warmth of sound supplied by producer and sound engineer Ralph Couzens, son of the late Chandos founder, and you have a gem - worthy of all the accolades one could heap on it. At this point it would be important for the reader to know what other recordings of the waltzes I consider significant. Here I have limited myself to ones that include all 19 waltzes rather than just the usual 14. Dmitri Alexeev, Stephen Hough, Zoltan Kocsis, and Alice Sara Ott are all excellent. The Nocturnes are a bonus, and they are superb in every way. Lortie plays them as if apparitions seen in a dream. Jeffrey Kallberg's notes are of high quality and briefly discuss each piece.
