Notes & Reviews:

Metamorphosis - for me - has always been a concept taken from the script of a film noir and occasionally translated into real life - or culled from a Hitchcock movie or from Alice in Wonderland. From a purely aesthetic (and artistic) point of view I have been especially interested in two things - creating the "inexistent" and transforming "worlds", and also in consolidating what is invisible to the human eye, or what is inaudible to the human ear. But music should never be only a mirror reflecting reality just as we see it. It has ever been a window that opens up only to the artistic imagination. Besides many other factors, this window should in my view have one essential part: the ever-changing Improvisation - a somewhat overlooked subject but absolutely essential in the process of creating rather than just regurgitating. Alicja Smietana

American Record Guide, September/October 2015
Alicja Smietana is a Polish violinist based in London. Among her teachers were David Takeno and Christian Tetzlaff. She performs here with the Cracow-based Extra Sounds Ensemble. Three of the works presented here are authentic baroque music, and two are pieces written in the style of the baroque, at least as far as the composers understand baroque style. Alfred Schnittke's Suite in the Old Style is from the other end of the 20th Century. Much of the time it sounds like Respighi's baroque arrangements only with a smaller orchestra and it is very fine. The works by Corelli and Vivaldi are played with plenty of spirit and taste, and the musicians seem to be enjoying themselves. Overall, this is a very fine program. If you recoil in horror at the name Schnittke, fear not: he aims more at gentle humor here than shock effect.
