Notes & Reviews:

The Guardian, 8th April 2015
[The Concerto is] a rich, indulgent mix, typical of Henze's music of this period, and not everything hangs together. But that isn't the point...[Vitaliano Raddoppiato] is sometimes acerbic, sometimes achingly beautiful, in many ways it's the epitome of so much of Henze's music.

Hans Werner Henze's Violin Concerto No. 2 occupies a space between the theatre and concert stages. A dramatic work with a ro^le for a speaker, it comes from the period of his interest in 'action music' and is scored for a large experimental chamber orchestra. Equally Janus-faced, but very different, is the Italianate Il Vitalino raddoppiato, vividly colored and overtly romantic 'chamber music' that looks back to the example of Tomaso Vitali. The Concerto is heard in an archive performance conducted by the composer. This volume concludes Peter Sheppard Skærved's survey of Henze's works for violin and orchestra (the First and Third Concertos are on 8.557738).

Sunday Times, 19th April 2015
This vivid pairing of concertos presents a double take on Henze as that rather rare creature, the musical ironist.

Gramophone Magazine, July 2015
Where some composers wear polystylism as a cloak - or mask - with Henze it comes from within a natural response to the musical challenges encountered. Through it all, Skaerved weaves his haunting presence as primus inter pares in what can be heard as expanded chamber music. A superb disc.

American Record Guide, September/October 2015
The concerto performance, with the present soloist and the composer conducting, was originally issued on a BBC release connected to its magazine, and the tape had to be found and remastered for this recording. I suppose it has some historical significance for Henze aficionados. Notes by the violinist, who was intimately involved with the composer at the time.
