Notes & Reviews:

The Times, 8th May 2015
If you buy only one record of harpsichord music in your life...buy this sensational album...he emerges as a superstar whose musicianship, imagination, virtuosity, cultural breadth and charisma far transcends the ivory tower in which the harpsichord has traditionally been placed.

The first DG harpsichord album released in over 30 years, Time Present and Time Past is an eclectic program fusing Baroque with Minimalism. Gramophone Award winner Mahan explores the relationship between two musical genres 300 years apart, emphasizing their similarities by playing all the pieces on period instruments, never before done with the Reich and Gorecki pieces.

The Telegraph, 10th May 2015
This collection of harpsichord pieces old and new shows Esfahani at his vibrant and expressive best.

The Guardian, 14th May 2015
Equating minimalism and baroque music is not new, but Esfahani, always a sparky and searching player, juxtaposes them here so as to create an unusually direct link...[the Reich] the harpsichord creates new textures and effects, including moments when the music seems to leap out in 3D.

Financial Times, 16th May 2015
Esfahani's playing brings the old face to face with the new.

Gramophone Magazine, June 2015
Esfahani sails through with tasteful bravura...[his] firmly centred articulation and rhythm make a plausible case for Steve Reich's Piano Phase as a harpsichord vehicle, even if one misses the cumulative effect of the piano's resonance.

American Record Guide, September/October 2015
All the performances, of course, are compelling and ecstatic. I also enjoy the variety of tonal variation and articulation Esfahani achieves in the solo works, especially the CPE Bach Folia Variations. This release continues to show why Mahan Esfahani is an important new artist. All the hallmarks of his wide-ranging musical sensibility are familiar enough. Esfahani understands very well his position as an artist who takes the present and the past into equal account - he has the ability to take the harpsichord and its vast literature into the next century and to create performances that speak to today's pluralistic listeners.
