Notes & Reviews:

American Record Guide, September/October 2015
Juan Pablo Contreras is a young (born 1987) Mexican composer who studied in the US with Richard Danielpour and Daniel Catan. His music is much influenced by his Mexican heritage, not only in his use of vernacular sources but also in his desire to explore the emotional meaning of his homeland's mixed racial ancestry and all-too-bloody history. The three (all quite recent) pieces on this well-enough-played-and-recorded program illustrate Contreras's attempt to evoke and perhaps also understand what it means to be Mexican.
