Notes & Reviews:

Better known to most listeners as a performer and conductor, Dominique Vellard is also a talented composer. As one might expect, Vellard's compositions are highly influenced by his connection to both the content and the styles of the sacred music he has performed over his long career. His writing is primarily contrapuntal, born of his familiarity with Medieval and Renaissance repertoire. On this recording, the men's voices take the role of traditional chantres, or cantors, while the women's voices expand the music's rich sound palette.

Dominique Vellard (b 1953) is a tenor, conductor, musicologist, and teacher whose scholarship and vocal talent have been the driving forces behind the Ensemble Gilles Binchois he founded in 1979. Vellard is also a composer who blends the medieval with the modern, even as he alludes to the musical traditions of Japan, Asiatic Georgia, and India in his writing. Select any work on this program and you'll hear his melismas spinning every which way, as 14th-Century performance styles and practices are placed at the service of 21st-Century harmonies. All of this is rendered with commendable skill by the ensemble.

But I must be truthful. While the 10 minutes of Les Beatitudes for two sopranos passed quickly, and I was amazed by the accuracy and stamina on display as Vellard intoned his own lengthy Lamentation of Jeremiah. So while I admired much of what I heard. I was grateful for the notes and translations in the booklet, which kept me in the game.
