Arnulfo Miramontes (1881-1960): Romanzas y Mazurkas - chamber works / Bernardo Jimenez Casilla; Laura Perez Rosillo

Notes & Reviews:

Mexican composer, pianist, organist, conductor and teacher Arnulfo Miramontes Romo de Vivar received his musical training in Aguascalientes, Guadalajara and Berlin. His talent was recognized with numerous awards, and on the Mexican music scene he was a distinguished presence. This representative sampling of Miramontes' chamber compositions - some originally scored for different ensembles re-arranged by the composer - were written between the late 1910s and the start of 1920s. The piano is a part of the ensemble in all of them, and, except where indicated, are all published works.

There is nice variety in the music; some of the songs seem almost folk-like; and others, like 'Las Hojas Caen', are more introspective. Two mazurkas are lively pieces played with nice energy here. The performances are pretty good.
