Bobby Byrd (Soul): Hot Pants: I'm Coming, Coming, I'm Coming

Album Notes

This is an absolutely smokin' compilation of 1970s cuts by soul brother number two Bobby Byrd (cuts one through 11) and the deep sultry funkiness of Vicki Anderson, as herself and as Momie-O (tracks 12 through 18). Issued on CD by P-Vine in Japan, this comp is a truly badass, wildly raucous kind of funk. Byrd's tracks all feature the J.B.'s, and Anderson's feature the J.B.'s and strings. The whole set is admirable, and standouts are tough to pick. One listen to Anderson's read of Betty Wright's "Don't Throw Your Love in the Garbage Can is enough to bring shivers, especially with that wig-out bass getting pushed to the front at the end of each line. Byrd's rushed version of "Signed, Sealed & Delivered," with wonky guitar and punched-up horns, turns that jam on its ear. "Never Get Enough" is classic James Brown funk with Brown on backing vocals urging Byrd on, while "Let Me Know" and the tough grooves in "Keep on Doin' What You're Doin'" are positively infectious. There is nothing but pleasure on this disc, and anyone truly interested in the depth of Brown's own contribution should check this mother out. ~ Thom Jurek
