Notes & Reviews:

Imre Kertész - winner of the Nobel Prize for Literature in 2002 and one of the last remaining survivors of Auschwitz and Buchenwald - celebrates his 85th birthday on the 9th of November 2014. This CD reflects central aspects of his literature as a collage of word and sound - with excerpts from "Galley Log Book" read by Hanns Zischler and works by Stefan Litwin, Anton Webern, Gideon Klein and Bernd Alois Zimmermann; interpreted by Stefan Litwin and the Ensemble Resonanz.

The musical contributions brought together on the CD are then set in context and commented on by means of excerpts from Galley Log Book. Stefan Litwin's melodrama ".....But not Hell" is based on a key scene in the novel "Fatelessness" by Imre Kertész and picks up the problematic aspect of dodecaphony, as already critiqued by Theodor W. Adorno in the Philosophy of New Music - a de-subjectification as a consequence of logic inherent in the system - and makes this musically tangible. Anton Webern's Variations for Piano op. 27, composed in 1935, was a model of dodecaphony taken to the extreme in the high point of serialism after the Second World War, where method was already starting to take precedence over other parameters. Finally, with the string trios of Bernd Alois Zimmermann and Gideon Klein, there is a contrast of two composers, whose fate in the Second World War could not have been more different: One was conscripted into the German Army and survived, the other murdered in a concentration camp.
