Notes & Reviews:

Whoever wants to play chamber music on the double bass has little from which to choose. The big names in string music literature tend to disregard the deepest instrument to a great extent; however, Antonín Dvorák's Quintet, op. 77 is an exception. Aside from such a wellknown name, there are a variety of composers who have written instrumentation with double bass, such as the Frenchmen George Onslow or Adolphe Blanc, whose 3rd, 4th and 7th string quartets were played by the fabergé quintet in 2013. The resulting CD was awarded Chamber Music Performance of the Year (strings/19th century music) by ECHO Klassik in 2014. In this recording, the fabergé quintet turns to the piano quintets in C minor by Ralph Vaughan Williams and Hermann Goetz. Playing the piano is Yoko Kikuchi.

The double bass is a rarity even in chamber music featuring the piano, even though Franz Schubert's Trout Quintet D 667 for piano, violin, viola, cello and double bass famously included it.

However, this instrumental potential drew only two composers of the late-romantic era: Hermann Goetz and Ralph Vaughan Williams, who both chose this dark C minor key or 'destiny key' for their works. In Schubert's A major quintet, however, the calm serenity of the Trout's song theme not only determined the variations there of, rather it seems to radiate from there throughout the piece. Goetz, who died young from tuberculosis, wrote his quintet in 1874, and the young Vaughan Williams wrote his in 1903.
