Notes & Reviews:

Sylvia Parker is Senior Lecturer of Music at the Univ. of Vermont, where she teaches piano and music theory. Ms. Parker performs frequently as piano soloist and ensemble player in Vermont, nationally and internationally. She has played numerous recitals and concertos of traditional repertory, and enjoys a special interest in music of the 20th c. and beyond. This noted special interest is brought to bear on Centaur's Peasant Jewels, a 2CD compilation of solo piano music by Béla Bartók, recorded by Ms. Parker in January, 2014 at the Univ. of Vermont Music Recital Hall.

American Record Guide, November/December 2015
Parker offers a selection of Bartok's miniatures inspired by peasant folk songs (and calls it Peasant Jewels). These works have rarely been heard on the stage; they are used as teaching tools for young piano students (many of them are marked "For Children" or "First Term at the Piano"). She plays with charm and an ear for the folk scales, rhythms, and phrasing. At the end of the program she includes six field recordings, for a perspective on Bartok's ethnography. They reveal Bartok's inspiration for many of these piano works.
