Notes & Reviews:

Although orchestral music and operettas such as Tom Jones (Naxos 8.660270-71) were Edward German's main focus as composer, he wrote a dozen or so works specifically for violin and piano, most of them during his time at the Royal Academy of Music, where he was recognized as a gifted violinist, and the years immediately following. Many of these pieces were written for his own use, including his earliest known compositions. From the beguiling charm of salon pieces such as the Chanson d'Amour to the haunting Souvenir, these works are exquisitely crafted miniatures, several of which have remained unheard for over a century.

American Record Guide, November/December 2015
These are attractive miniatures for violin and piano by a composer always adept at the light touch. Some are adapted from German's theater music. To take some of the better ones, Souvenir (1896) is well laid out for both players, each getting his fair share of the dialog. Bolero is a neat little showpiece for the violin with some rapid bow-pizzicato interchanges to manage as well as a glissando up into rarefied regions. Nocturne is a charming lullaby with strophic song structure. Moto Perpetuo typically gets lots of flying 1/16th notes, but it's still entertaining. The Sprite's Dance in parts has the players using detached notes like a humorous Webern. The performances mix sensitivity, vigor, and taste in equal proportions for an hour of enjoyment. A curious sidelight: according to the liner notes, in his youth the composer's name was pronounced with a hard G more like Gherman.
