Notes & Reviews:

Upheld by many as a queen amongst her peers, violinist Camilla Wicks led a stellar career in the dozen years following World War II. At the peak of her fame she retired from the concert stage to devote herself to her family. Upon resuming her career she remained an outstanding if intermittent performer for several more decades. Wicks made few commercial recordings besides a famed 1952 performance of the Sibelius Concerto. Now this precious set, spanning five decades and a vast range of repertoire, offers the most comprehensive collection of her concert performances ever likely to be assembled. It offers an in-depth insight into Wicks' evolution from captivating, devil-may-care young virtuoso to profound interpreter. Music & Arts is pleased to make these great performances available for those who have long wished for Wicks' discography to be expanded, and to enable a wider audience to be stirred by this extraordinary violinist and artist.

American Record Guide, September/October 2015
Wicks gives a fine performance of a work that I had never heard before, Germaine Tailleferre's Sonata 1. It is a very fine work and there is enough incident and the harmonies are so inventive that you hardly notice. This is a work from a composer with a distinct personality, and it deserves a wider audience. This performance is very fine. Wicks is certainly one of the great violinists of her time. She has devoted herself to teaching aside from performing, and her students remark about how fine she is in that role. No one who has played an instrument could argue with that. Her effectiveness as a teacher is evident in the very polished, expressive playing of Jonas Batstrand, whose recording of the violin music of Hjalmar Borgstrom is reviewed in this issue. Camilla Wicks finally has a body of recorded work that will put her name in the history books. I hope that this set will find many listeners.
