The Sixteen's Palestrina cycle may just be a classic in the making.

The Sixteen continues its acclaimed series of discs exploring the work of Italian Renaissance master Giovanni Pierluigi da Palestrina. An enormous body of sacred works, including over 100 masses, rightly earned Palestrina the title of "the prince and father of music." His legacy has impacted sacred music worldwide for over 400 years.

American Record Guide, November/December 2015
This is the sixth volume in the series of Palestrina recordings by Harry Christophers and The Sixteen. The object is not to record the complete works of Palestrina - there are 104 masses alone - but a representative survey of works from every part of his life including many that are little known. Each volume includes a mass setting and a selection of shorter works. Here the mass is the first of two based on the song L'homme ArmT'. It was published in 1570 in the Third Book of Masses, but is very likely a much earlier work. The cantus firmus and mensuration techniques he uses were considered very old-fashioned in the later 16th Century.

Most of the motets on this program are penitential. Among them are three offertories - ' Super Flumina Babylonis', 'De Profundis Clamavi', and 'Si Ambulavero in Medio Tribulationis' - from a total of 68 published in two volumes in 1593. Two of the motets - 'Tribulationes Civitatum Audivimus' and 'Tribularer si Nescirem' - take their texts from liturgical office responsories. In contrast with these penitential works are 3 from a set of 29 settings of texts from the Song of Songs. They are not liturgical motets but may have been intended for devotional gatherings of the sort promoted by St Philip Neri. They were among Palestrina's most popular works in his lifetime.
