American Record Guide, September/October 2015
Here is a complete broadcast concert from 31 January 1937, including copious commentary from the redoubtable Deems Taylor. The occasion was a series of eight concerts given in New York by composer-conductors. Enesco (1881-1955), better known as a violin virtuoso and composer than a conductor, is as impressive as one might expect and the Schumann symphony has an especially melting slow movement and is performed in the best over-the-top late romantic way. The two opera interludes by Ion Nonna Otescu (1888-1940) include a cimbalom. Otescu won an Enesco Prize in 1913 and may have been a protege.
