Van Der Ploeg plays with virtuosity and conviction and handles the color and dynamic possibilities of this organ with great skill. The Parry works combine the contrapuntal influence of Bach with the harmonic idiom of Brahms. One is reminded of Reger with more melody. Stanford wrote five substantial organ sonatas, and this one is based on his hymn-tune Engelberg. It has its moments.
