Notes & Reviews:

For the first time on a single budget CD, some of the finest compositions for wind instruments by the German composer and violinist Louis Spohr. The Octet in E Major - performed by the Boskovsky brothers' Vienna Octet - employs an unusual arrangement of instruments and demands great skill from the horn section and the violinist (Willi Boskovsky). The Clarinet Concerto No. 1 features Gervase de Peyer, principal clarinettist of the London Symphony Orchestra for two decades and a world-renowned soloist. The Nonet combines the Fine Arts Quartet (of Chicago) and the New York Wind Quintet, which join forces for a thrilling and pleasurable 'Gran Nonetto.'

Gramophone
The Clarinet Concerto' has a very beautiful Adagio, and has a sense of musical direction which is often lacking in this gifted composer. And for those who want good music, there is the really excellent and sombre scherzo.

Nonet
The players contribute much to these apparent qualities in the music of affability, gaiety and good balance, and such a modestly-priced version is very welcome.
