Notes & Reviews:

Hendrik Andriessen's Third Symphony displays his whole artistic arsenal, above all in the brilliant fugue finale that sounds neither heavy nor intellectually complex. The composer conducted its premiere with the Concertgebouw Orchestra on 26 October 1946. The framing movements of his Symphonie concertante are more reminiscent of finely formed symphonic movements, while the central Andante grazioso with its variations is closer to the 18th c. model. Chantacler, an overture inspired by the drama of the same name by the French stage poet Edmond Rostand (1868-1918), rounds off the CD program.

Gramophone Magazine, September 2015
[Andriessen's Third Symphony] is expertly crafted music - the fugue is especially resourceful - which could never be accused of triviality.

The Guardian, 10th July 2015
The Symphonie Concertante dates from 1962, but commutes stylistically between the 18th and the 20th centuries, while the overture Chantecler, inspired by Rostand's play, is highly effective and attractive programme music that is played, like everything on the disc, with uncomplicated efficiency by the Netherlands Symphony Orchestra under David Porcelijn.

American Record Guide
Hendrik (not Louis) Andriessen (1892-1981) was best known as a Dutch musicologist and church organist. In WW II he was interred and held until the end of the war... Energetic, tonal, lyrical, and firmly constructed as one would expect from a high-level musical intellectual, the piece is tuneful, involving, and completely competitive with the best of the music of its time. Sibelius seems to have been an influence. Steeped in classical tradition but firmly modern, the work is quite romantic in its neoclassicism. The slow movement is a sonata form, the finale a sizzling fugue. This is one of those unfairly neglected finds collectors are so fond of. I loved it, and I think you will too.
