Notes & Reviews:

This recording presents the chorale variations for solo viola da gamba by an anonymous 17th-century master, collected in the so-called Berlin Gamba Book. Only the initials of the arranger - 'J.R.' - are known, but this was clearly someone of passion and discernment who transformed hymns into instrumental music which preserves the solemnity and gravitas of the originals. Dietmar Berger's recording of the Manchester Gamba Book (8.572863-64) was acclaimed as 'a considerable achievement by any standard' (Gramophone).

Notes & Reviews:

Dietmar Berger THE BERLIN GAMBA BOOK Naxos

The movement to revive Renaissance and Baroque era music continues to pick up steam, with more and more scholars, music publishers, instrument makers and musicians adding their efforts to seek out and make available to a growing public compositions previously unheard for centuries.
Dietmar Bergers interesting new recording of music from the anonymously compiled, 17th century Berlin Manuscript presents intabulations for solo viola de gamba. Despite the many and varied secular and religious sources (9 of which remain untraceable), there is a uniform consistency to the feel of this music, suggesting that whoever wrote these adaptations of and variations on previously existing melodies was a talented amateur with an original mind.
The sound quality of the recording itself is excellent, as is the musicianship; though Mr. Berger states that these pieces were not intended as a display of virtuosity, his own sure touch and depth of feeling for the music are evident in every track.
The Berlin Gamba Book by Dietmar Berger may not be for every taste, but it will be welcomed by fans of early music and can be recommended to anyone else seeking out a unique listening.
After all, how often does one run across solo music for 7 string viola de gamba?

Highly Recommended 9 out of 10 Oscar O. Veterano

Amazing chorale variations for solo Viola da Gamba
This two CD set consists of arrangements of hymns by an unknown person of the 17th-century with the initials J.R. collected in the Berlin Gamba Book (as it is known). The works themselves are clearly not written for the solo instrument, but the arrangements are so wonderfully done that the solemn peacefulness and dignity of each work is readily apparent. And listening to them being performed by a soloist of Mr. Bergers caliber is pleasurable indeed.
It is hard for me to single out any one piece of the 35 here as each has something to say to the listener, and to fully absorb the impact of this gentle and purposeful music will take many more hours of listening. Be warned it is completely and totally captivating, and the sonorities of the instrument became a welcome companion for the 3 or 4 listening experiences I have treated myself to.
The liner notes are short but informative, and the recording quality is outstanding. The atmosphere of the St. Andreas Church in Cologne, Germany, is undeniably part of the wonderful texture captured by the microphones. If you adore Viola da Gamba, then this disc is for you. Very Highly Recommended!
