Notes & Reviews:

Anna Vinnitskaya has now joined with Alpha Classics. Her first recording with the label is devoted to one of her repertoires of choice: the concertos of Dimitri Shostakovich. 'Anna Vinnitskaya displays a dazzling, indeed Olympian technique, combined with a particularly bold taste for differentiating sonic textures...Stubborn, virtuosic, possessive and possessed, Anna Vinnitskaya is a musician who never cheats. That was bound to bring her luck.' Marie-Aude Roux, Le Monde, 2009 "Vinnitskaya's sound at her entrance in the first movement was an ideal balance of vulnerability and focus, turning on a dime to sail headlong into the work's demanding technical passages. She gave a blazing performance of the second movement of Prokofiev's Piano Sonata No. 2 as an encore." -- Jennifer Hambrick, The Columbus Dispatch, May 23, 2015

American Record Guide, May/June 2016
These are excellent performances. The concertos are almost like chamber music, so it's uncommon to find a poor performance of either - and these certainly excellent performances. Ms Vinnitskaya's solo work is whip-crack sharp and doesn't miss a bit of Shostakovich's sardonic wit or the simple, unstressed lyricism of the slow movements. Mr Willner executes the trumpet part as well as anybody who has tackled it, and the chamber orchestra is superb, whether led by Ms Vinnitskaya in Concerto 1 or conducted by Mr Wellber in Concerto 2. The recorded sound is first-rate as well, with a sensible, realistic balance between the solo piano (and trumpet in No. 1) and the orchestra.

There are so many superb recordings of these works. If you don't already own recordings of these works, this is a fine one to fill an important corner of your collection. Two things the present album offers that those older ones do not: the short Concertino and Tarantella, both for two pianos. Both works reveal the nicely executed by Vinnitskaya and Ivan Rudin. The music and the performances complement the main works very well.
