Notes & Reviews:

Neeme Järvi and the Gothenburg Symphony continue their Kurt Atterberg symphony survey. The late-Romantic Symphony No.1 (1909-11, rev. 1913) was written during his student days at the Royal Institute of Technology, Stockholm, and in-between military service and scholarship travel to Germany. His Symphony No.5 gets its title ‘Funebre’ from the slow, tragic second movement. Atterberg made several revisions to this work, even rewriting the last movement twenty-five years later; the revised version has been recorded here. “Technicolor music in first class performances” MusicWeb Int’l

BBC Music Magazine, October 2015
With its Romantic richness and driving dark energy, it's no exaggeration to say [the Fifth] prefigures classic 1930s and '40s horror film scores...Neeme Jarvi's performances are generally energetic and likeable...the fine SACD sound displays the Gothenburg players to advantage.

Gramophone Magazine, August 2015
The First Symphony is a rewarding listen, especially in this full-blooded account from the Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra, and Neeme JSrvi has the measure of the composer's style... the Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra bring out [the Fifth's] wild moods beautifully.

American Record Guide
To me [Atterburg] sounds Brahmsian, with warm strings and sweeping themes. In fact, Symphony 1 immediately reminded me of the Brahms First. The opening movement is certainly late romanticism - but high romanticism, too... It is fair to say that this is a composer whose music is warm and reassuring... All of his music is easy to listen to and never seems a waste of time... At any rate, I keep Atterberg on my shelf, because one can't listen to the same thing again and again.
