Schubert: Winterreise / Peter Schreier, voice; Dresden Streichquartett

Album Summary

Performer Ensemble Composer

Notes & Reviews:

Peter Schreier took his time before tackling this "difficult piece", rarely performed by tenors. His legendary live recording of February 15, 1985 with pianist Sviatoslav Richter is a striking debut and a unique document. In the ensuing years he chose to interpret Schubert's Winter Journey with András Schiff as a sympathetic accompanist. In his 70th birthday year, Schreier returned once again to the studio in March 2005 to record the version of Winter Journey arranged for voice and string quartet by the Kassel composer Jens Josef. At the height of his powers, he then retired from the stage.

Why do performers think we need to hear Winterreise accompanied by instruments other than piano? Pregardien recorded it with an instrumental ensemble that included accordion (J/A 2008). Now we get a valedictory release by Schreier recorded at age 70 in 2005 accompanied by a string quartet in an arrangement by Jens Joseph.

We have his Winterreise recordings with Sviatoslav Richter (S/O 1994) and Andras Schiff. If you want to hear Schreier sing Winterreise try either of those, especially the one with Richter.
