Notes & Reviews:
The latest in this series of vintage Hamburg Opera films focuses on Beethoven's only opera in another staging by Rolf Liebermann, regarded as "one of the most influential figures of the post-war musical scene" (The Independent) and responsible for transforming the fortunes of Hamburg Opera during the 1960s and early 70s. Leonore's "Töt erst sein Weib!", sung by soprano Anja Silja, is just one of many highlights of this studio production, recorded in 1968. The natural staging and unostentatious production allows attention to focus on the strong emotions and great musical moments, and the film offers a sumptuous cast: Anja Silja as Leonore, Lucia Popp as Marzelline, Richard Cassilly as Florestan, Hans Sotin as Don Fernando and Theo Adam as Don Pizarro.
