Notes & Reviews:

Baroque composer Stefano Landi’s lesser-known opera Sant’Alessio - the earliest opera on a historical, rather than mythological subject — has rarely been performed because of its reliance on eight male singers (all castrati). Undeterred, conductorWilliam Christie has put together a new production of this moving work which employs a remarkable eight countertenors. Leading among them are two established Virgin Classics stars—Philippe Jaroussky in the title role, and Max Emmanuel Cencic as his wife. Fans of Baroque opera should not miss this work of stunning beauty, whose recent performances at Lincoln Center in New York received fervent praise.
